This whitepaper provides a timely overview of emerging marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) methodologies, which are defined as methods of intervention that sequester carbon in seawater, open ocean, and coastal ecosystems. This analysis was conducted through a collaboration between the New England Aquarium (NEAq) and SeaAhead, as part of a federal Economic Development Administration grant, and it draws on scientific, environmental, regulatory, policy, and business perspectives to examine a range of approaches to mCDR and methodologies for measuring their efficacy. The goal is to assess opportunities and challenges inherent to the mCDR sector and empower investors to evaluate different options in this rapidly developing space.
Key topics covered are:
1) Background information on and status of mCDR techniques (ocean-based carbon storage solutions);
2) Regulatory and carbon market landscapes and criteria required for success therein, and
3) Methods and technologies for Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) of carbon sequestration, including areas where start-ups/ growth companies are addressing unmet needs in MRV platforms, sensors, and models that may be of interest to investors. An overview of carbon markets and how mCDR technology fits into that landscape is also available as an appendix to this paper.
